This project for the First Congregational Church of Essex,
designed by Thomas Mayo Associates/ Architects & Urban Designers, provided much needed classroom and office space,
as well as provisions for handicapped accessibility to the existing church,
originally built in 1792. Renovations to the existing building included the
addition of a new stairway and elevator providing handicapped access to the
2nd level sanctuary, and kitchen renovations. The new addition replaced an
old deteriorated carriage shed structure to the rear of the existing church.
Arched openings in the new addition were designed to reflect the character of
the original shed. Site bollards are recycled granite bases from the old
shed. View from North |
