Heritage State Park Visitor’s Center
Gardner, Massachusetts

Thomas Mayo Associates / Architects & Urban Designers, in conjunction with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management and the City of Gardner, converted the former Lake Street Fire Station into the main Visitor's Center for the Gardner Heritage State Park.

This elegant structure, originally built in the late 1800's as a fire house, along with a more recent wing constructed in the 1930's was completely renovated (with particular attention to restoration of original exterior detailing) and adapted to provide two levels of interpretive exhibit space connected with a grand staircase,  reception and meeting room, information  center, staff  offices and handicapped accessible public facilities. In addition to the building renovation, a portion of the  street in front of the Visitor's Center has been closed  and converted to a landscaped pedestrian plaza.

The building contains exhibits designed by Boston  Museum Design Group depicting the cultural heritage of Gardner and the history of the chair and furniture making industry for which Gardner has become famous.
