Thomas Mayo Associates was retained by Boston
University to convert this elegant 5-story former townhouse located in
Boston’s Back Bay into a dormitory for 20 students and a resident
advisor. The major design objective
was to maintain as much of the architectural detail as possible while still
meeting the program requirements. The
exterior was re-pointed and all windows replaced. The floor plan was only slightly modified
to accommodate the required number of student and the majority of the
woodwork details, such as the main stairway and the fireplaces in each room,
were retained. The building fulfills the
requirements of a dormitory while visually fitting into the surrounding
residential neighborhood.
